Perimeter Curtain Ledger (3×4 Timber at Rafter Ends)

This detail adds a 3×4 timber along the tips of the rafters to create a smooth, flat surface for
mounting curtain tracks, roll-down shades, bug screens, or storm fabric. Instead of attaching hardware to the
underside of the main beam, the ledger sits at the outer perimeter—perfect for bump-outs and angled eaves.

What It Does

  • Clean mounting face: Straight, continuous surface for rail systems and brackets.
  • Best perimeter position: Lets curtains fall outside the beam line for better weather and sun control.
  • Neater edge: Hides uneven rafter tips and provides a crisp termination at the thatch edge.
  • Light stiffening: Ties rafter tails together and helps reduce vibration at the eave.

Typical Use Cases

  • Clear vinyl or mesh weather curtains
  • Roll-down shades (manual or motorized)
  • Insect screens or privacy panels
  • Storm fabric or temporary wind panels on exposed faces

Install Notes

  • Run the 3×4 continuous along the eave; miter corners and continue across bump-outs for a level track line.
  • Fasten to rafter tails with exterior-rated screws/bolts; add blocking where spans are wide.
  • Keep a safe gap from the thatch edge; pre-drill to avoid splitting.
  • Seal or stain to match framing; use galvanized/stainless track hardware.
  • For motorized systems, plan a concealed wire path along the ledger before finishing.

This optional ledger is a simple way to get a straight, durable attachment point at the eave so perimeter
curtains and roll-downs work smoothly without cluttering the underside of the main beam.
